Meeting Minutes, September 21, 2005

Geoffrey Wilkinson, Chair, MMA Foundation
MMA Foundation founded in 1968 by Alumni; endowment has grown to
$4.1 million; MMA is the smallest Massachusetts State College; major fund
raising events include Adm. Ball and annual golf tournament; funds raised
goes toward cadets (i.e., Emory Rice Scholarship; Sea Term Scholarships);
Commonwealth of Massachusetts matches every $2 with $1 of money raised up
to $400,000. MMAPA President (Karen White) has been invited to sit on
the board as an Ex Officio. MMAPA has been approached by the Foundation
to have MMAPA scholarship funds deposited into MMA Foundation endowment. Currently,
MMAPA pays the Academy directly for sponsored scholarships. By depositing
MMAPA scholarship funds into MMA Foundation, MMAPA funds would be matched
by the Commonwealth. MMAPA would continue to be recognized as the sponsor
of their scholarships (Amd. Bresnahan Sea Term Scholarship and MMAPA Academic
Scholarships) and the Academy Scholarship Committee would continue to award
the scholarships. Karen White to meet with Board then meet with MMAPA
October 29th to finalize approval.

Record number of cadets enrolled (326); goal is to grow cadet population
to 1200; wastewater treatment facility capacity is 1200; a 2-story addition
underway on 1st & 2nd company; all dorms to be sprinkled; major construction
to be completed during sea term 2006; kitchen production area to be expanded;
a 660 kilowatt wind turbine to be erected by spring 2006; fuel cells to be
installed on gymnasium where pool is housed to heat pool year round; athletic
field to be leveled and artificial turf to be installed; Storer Building has
been renamed to Bresnahan Hall; 100 unsold parking tickets opened up to freshman
resulting from town marina closing for season; Enterprise has a max of 580
cadets for berthing; Sea Term 2006 will include all freshman, sophomore deck & engine
and senior deck & engine; Mediterranean is the destination.
Red Sox Ticket Raffle Drawing
Admiral Gurnon accepted the honors of drawing the winning Red Sox raffle
ticket. The winning raffle ticket number drawn was 461974 with the
winner Layne Kaye. Thank you to everyone who bought a raffle. All
proceeds raised funds sea term and academic scholarships. We will continue
to sell Patriot and Cruise raffle tickets during Family Day, October 29th. Go
Red Sox!
Secretary’s Minutes
A motion was made to accept the meeting minutes of June 8, 2005. Meeting
minutes accepted unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report
Currently low on T-shirts; t-shirts on order to replenish supplies; will
be delivered before Family Day, October 29th. Sales were brisk during
orientation; income raised totaled $7,589. Money collected for Alex
Haas scholarship totaled $280. MMAPA will match funds to total $500. MMAPA
will continue to accept donations in Alex’s name. A recommendation
was made to fund a 4/c Sea Term scholarship in Alex’s name. All
agreed.
New Business
· Jim Parker will be
collecting paper back books to stock Enterprise Library; Academy librarian
always looking for newer titles in good shape; will be collecting these during
Family Day, Saturday, October 29th at MMAPA table.
· Homecoming, Saturday,
September 24th, MMAPA plans to have a table; continue to sell raffle tickets
and t-shirts
· Family Day and Youngies
recognized as cadets Saturday, October 29th; MMAPA to have a table set up
either outside engineering building or just inside engineering building;
Admissions plans to continue to sell photos and videos for anyone who did
not get an opportunity to purchase at youngie orientation.
· Karen White made a
presentation on the MMA foundation invitation; She has been asked to sit
on the board as an Ex Officio; what needs to be determined is there a set
time money needs to be deposited; is there a set amount; need to have assurance
MMAPA name will remain on the scholarships awarded; Karen will make a presentation
on October 29th of her findings to the parents; a vote to be taken at that
time.
Fundraising
· Suncatcher manufactured
by Pairpoint Glass of Sagamore, MA. The design will be of the Enterprise
in the center with the words Massachusetts Maritime Academy printed on the
top rim and Parents Association on the bottom rim. The color of the
glass is Cobalt Blue (or the color of Caribbean water). A motion
was made to approve tooling costs and manufacturing. Will have for
Family Day, October 29th.
· Canvas tote with MMAPA
logo steamed pressed onto canvas; hot thermos mugs with MMAPA logo; Christmas
ornament with MMAPA logo; calendar pictures created into an 11x14 collage;
all have been tabled for further discussion at next MMAPA meeting.
